PODCASTING: Two Americas 'One With iPods, One Without'

Got an email from John Edward's One America Committee hyping his big issue, poverty, and his big foray into podcasting that begins tomorrow.
On Wednesday, March 23, the One America Committee Web site will post John Edwards' first podcast. We hear that he will have a very special guest.
Given the recent Pew Internet study that revealed iPods and other MP3 players are primarily a toy of the affluent, podcasting might seem an ironic channel choice for Mr. Edwards to speak out on the injustices of poverty.

Gordon, funny to come across you on the web!

My two cents -- I think it's great that Edwards is doing this. The thing is, there may be an "iPod gap" between rich and poor, but... probably it's the rich who most need to listen to messages about poverty, yah? ;)

Definitely agree about who needs to hear the message. I just hope Edwards is aware of the "gap" so he can frontload the message of using podcasting to "go to the affluent to speak about poverty" instead of getting blindsided by any reactionary backlash.

You should leave him a comment or write an email on that note at www.OneAmericaCommittee.com. He and Mrs. Edwards really are reading the messages, and are responding to them on the podcasts. Really. I know some of his folks, and helped out a bit on this. They're quite serious about getting comments like these and responding.

Your point doesn't make a lot of sense. You are saying that only the rich can play an MP3? Ooooookay.

Hey Dave, no point only a messaging suggestion so Mr. Edwards doesn't get caught off guard by political foes. I know you don't need an iPod to listen to an MP3, but podcasting and the iPod are intrinsically linked. That's a "pod" reality. If you are going to use a medium to talk about poverty you should be aware that some people perceive the dominant piece of hardware associated with the medium as a toy of the affluent. The suggestion was for Mr. Edwards to be aware of this fact and consider framing his messaging so he is out in front of the conversation instead of reacting to it. Thanks for writing!

It's live! Check it out, at:

Mrs. Edwards is especially cool on the MP3, and equally cool in real life.

I was not part of the Edwards team in '04, but... I give him serious props for being the first of the potential '08 candidates to do this.
